On Victoria Day 1944 the Canadian forces south of the Melfa river massed around the Mancini Farm in order to prepare to take the Melfa river crossing which was the last obstacle to Hwy #6 which opened the route to
Knowing that the Germans would be prepared for them at the main crossing the Canadians looked for a suitable crossing upstream to try and bridge so as to have two points of attack. The second crossing was bridged by the engineers and then secured by a reconnaisance force of the Strathcona Horse who ha to clear two nearby houses and almostdeal with an attack by Panthers late in the day.
The B.C Dragoons and theWestminsters (who were mounted in White Scout Cars and Carriers) dealt with the main crossing where dug in A/T guns and Panthers awaited them. The Germans counter attacked twice but were defeated leaving the route to Rome open.
